Between National Identity, Ideology, and Research Integrity. Balduin Saria and His Life Story

Abstract

The paper discusses the archaeologist Balduin Saria and his attitude towards National Socialist ideology as well as his stance during the turbulent political events of the first half of the twentieth century. The focus is on presenting the social circumstances that shaped him. It seems that, despite his principled sympathy for Nazism and support for the Pan-German Solution, which largely determined the choice of his research topic, he nonetheless managed to maintain his research integrity.
